Earth Hour

Earth hour had some really great designs. They had the classic 60 on black paper with a cutaway of the earth in the 60. This whole event was to stop global warming by turning off your light and everything electrical in your house for 1 hour or in this case 60 minutes. As you went on websites, TV and magazines they all promoted it, especially Google with the black background on the day of.

The Aftermath
At about 9:30pm on the day of we all saw that our entire neighborhood turned off their lights and its was really amazing to see not one light on in the distance and that we were really making a difference. In the news the next day I read that overall Ontario reduced its energy consumption of 4% and they plan to do this earth hour event every year and it will upgrade to hours then 3 then 4 and so on.

Its Alive Inside!!!!

This commercial has a take on the coke one of the whole surreal way of how it is made. This commercial shows a bunch or people suppose to be the actual suds of the beverage and the are all-bouncing off the walls making noise and what not. At the end the slogan comes up saying that it’s alive inside. I must agree with this promotion because I love Guinness because it’s different than all the other beers. It ahs a bold punch to it. I can almost feel like there’s something going on in the brew. What they managed to do was explore a whole sensation of what people have when drinking it. This is one of many great advertisings. Plus how they managed to take it on and show it is amazing with the men disappearing when they hit an object and then pans out tot eh actual pint of it.

Is Writing Design

This question could be answered either or to anyone. To me this is a question of whether I would choose to think of it as design. I believe that writing is a form of design and is also design.

The reason why I think it is a form of design is because, not everyone is “art creative”. They could either be music or writing creative too. They could come up with amazing stories or words that could inspire someone or many. It could be anything to anyone and depends on how they take it in.

It is also design, this is because a designer could take a bunch of words and make them visually appealing to someone. Make them stand out or just one word. They could actually give meaning to the words for people who have a hard time understand words but images come easily to them.

Would I do Pro Bono Work?

I believe that I don’t have an obligation to do pro bono work because it is silly and a waste of time. Why would I want to bury myself in work that I wouldn’t be getting paid for when I could be making mad money doing something else. Granted though that if it were for a charity event that I believe in or it was for a friend or family member then I would consider either do it for free or depending on how big of a job, giving them a discount. Its not rocket science I just think that it wouldn’t be fair to me if they decided to offer a job that they think they could get it for free. I don’t work like that if its worth the time and effort to think of an idea, and if I agree n the idea then it will cost them time and effort.

What i've learned so far...

• You get as much as you put into it.
• Disappointment makes you stronger
• You must be committed otherwise it will fail.
• Love it or don’t bother.
• Selfless gets you farther then selfish.
• Patience is a virtue.
• More is better than one.
• Let your intuition guide you.
• Never take anything for granted.
• Don’t think of success as one thing but one step closer.
• Karma can kick your ass.
• Don’t let life get you down, pull a 180 on it.
• When the bad gets going, swim harder.

AIGA Student Competition & Design Trends

I think that I learned a lot from the AIGA Student Competition. It showed me that presentation is a big aspect when pitching your design to a bunch of people including 2000 of them. The contestant named Matthew was able to do a great presentation for all of his work. He showed confidence in his work even when some didn’t think it was well designed. He gave a great explanation of why he chose it and his strategy as well for the voting campaign. If you are able to stand in front of that many people to show off your work and be able to sell it then you can do it in the work place.

For design trends of the competition, Humor and words stood out the most and were used a lot especially for the last two projects of re-designing a sausage package and raising the vote campaign. Words also playa big role as well, they also have just as much an impact ass a style or theme does. It can play an effect that could make it memorable.

How far would I Go?

When I finish my education and go out into the work place, I figure that I will try to get whatever work come my way. The only thing is that there will be line that I must draw for what I will do and what I won’t do. This really depends on the person, some may not do it because it affects their personal morals or they might just do it because they are offered a lot of money and don’t care. Money is something that can be easily distracting. It can definitely make you do whatever is necessary to earn it. The money for me is a nice thing but it can only go so far. For me I would accept almost any job except ones that would interfere with my personal morals. Such of that would be consisting in advertising smoking, abortion and drugs. I do have a line but its one that is a dot to me.

Selling Experience in Graphic Design & Advertising

In my opinion I believe that advertising and graphic design are heading towards delivering experience as the end product. When you look at what people are interested in, they only want to see something that could either relate to them or give them a type of experience that they could relate to. The experience that these people are observing must have some relevance in their life, if not then they wouldn’t care about it. They want something that satisfies their needs, such as cleaning up the house with ease with those swiffer wipes or magic erasers from Mr. clean. It’s not the product that is being sold it is the experience, without it no one would have nothing to gain from it.

The AIGA

Command X

When viewing the AIGA, some of my initial reactions were, who were these people who made it this far? What was their personality like, what makes them different from me? As the show progressed I witnessed each of their designs and how they perceived the project as well as the subject and how they could make it better. For the logo of the football team, there were a few good ones and some bad ones. How it was set up was the host presented each of the candidates and then introduced the judges for the competition as well as someone from the art direction department of the football team. Then the presenters showed and explained why they decided to design it that way. Over all the experience was n o different than it would be between a regular client explaining your design for them. The only difference is the other 2000 people viewing your work. The main thing is to have confidence in selling your work and be able to have a good reason why you designed it that way. Its what differs them from someone who knows what they wants.
